Electron cyclotron waves in the presence of parallel electric fields in the Earth’s auroral plasma

چکیده
The electron cyclotron waves that originate at low altitudes ( 0.5 R E ) and observed by ground facilities have been studied in the presence of a weak parallel electric field in auroral magnetoplasma consisting of trapped energetic auroral electrons and cold background electrons of ionospheric origin. The model distribution for auroral trapped electrons is taken as Maxwellian ring distribution. An expression for the growth rate has been obtained in the presence of parallel electric field assuming that the real frequency in the whistler mode is not affected by the presence of the electric field. The results show that waves grow (or damp) in amplitude for a parallel (or antiparallel) electric field. The influence of the electric field is more pronounced at a shorter wavelength spectrum. An increase in population of energetic electrons increases the growth rate and thus, plays a significant role in the wave excitation process in the auroral regions.

Amplification of electrostatic ion-cyclotron waves in a plasma with magnetic-field-aligned ion flow shear and no electron current
Experimental demonstration of the amplification of electrostatic ion-cyclotron waves in a plasma with parallel ion flow shear but no magnetic-field-aligned electron current is presented. Waves with frequencies near the ion gyrofrequency and multiple harmonics launched from an antenna are observed to grow in amplitude in a region of ion flow shear. Amplification of multiple cyclotron harmonics w...
متن کاملTransport of thermal plasma above the auroral ionosphere in the presence of electrostatic ion-cyclotron turbulence
The electron component of intensive electric currents ̄owing along the geomagnetic ®eld lines excites turbulence in the thermal magnetospheric plasma. The protons are then scattered by the excited electromagnetic waves, and as a result the plasma is stable. As the electron and ion temperatures of the background plasma are approximately equal each other, here electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC) tu...

[1] A comparison of modeled simulation results with in situ observations is presented in an effort to better understand the generation mechanism of short-burst radiation (AKR) observed in the Alfvénic acceleration region. The simulation is performed using a linear gyrofluid Alfvén model to generate propagating inertial Alfvén waves with a test particle scheme to study the behavior of electrons ...

Magnetically confined plasma can be heated with high power microwave sources. In spherical torus the electron plasma frequency exeeds the electron cyclotron frequency (EC) and, as a consequence, electromagnetic waves at fundamental and low harmonic EC cannot propagate within the plasma. In contrast, electron Bernstein waves (EBWs) readily propagate in spherical torus plasma and are absorbed str...
متن کاملGeneration of “spiky” potential structures associated with multiharmonic electrostatic ion-cyclotron waves
The production of coherent, “spiky” electrostatic potential structures, similar to the spiky electric-field structures that have been observed in the Earth’s auroral region, is investigated in a magnetized Q machine plasma. These structures are associated with coherent multiharmonic electrostatic ion-cyclotron EIC waves in a current-free plasma having a localized region of ion flow shear ion fl...
